The Story of Kyra's Birth

• 2:15pm Wednesday March 15 - Kandis went for Doctors appointment, and was told that she should be induced soon (as she was 5 days over).
• 11:00pm went to sleep excited about what will transpire the next day.
• Thursday March 16th
• 5:30am Kandis woke up, had some tea and read a book
  
• 7:45am Got the call from the hospital to come down anytime.
• 8:00am Mike showers, Kandis prepares his lunch
• 8:30am left for the hospital
• 9:00am arrived at the hospital
• 9:15am brought into the labour room #8, hooked up the heart monitor, 25 minutes of database questions by nurses (Debbie, Leah white, and Jodie)
  
• 9:40am Left alone in the room on the monitor
• 10:00am Jackie (the nurse intern) came in and asked some more questions
• 10:05am Left alone again
• 10:10am Kandis got examined by (nurse Debbie and Jackie), Found out that she was already 2-3cm dialated and 75% effaced.
  -In Leah's words "things are looking good"
  -In Debbies' words "She is looking favorable"
• 10:25am Apply Jel to induce (by Nurse Debbie and Jackie)
• 10:40am Contractions started within 15 minutes of Jel
• 11:00am Leah checked blood pressure again, contractions were every 3 minutes
• 11:10am Lunch was brought in for Kandis (beef bun, salad w/ chicken, and milk)
• 12:00pm Contractions are now closer together and more intense
• 12:25pm Another blood pressure test
• 12:30-1:00 Walked up and down the hallways (Kandis' parents arrived)
• 1:00pm Leah checked the heart rate again
• 1:15pm Another nurse finally convinced Kandis to go into the bath tub for a while (it took a little convincing, and the feel 0f a hot water bottle)
• 1:20pm found out that the bath was a bubble bath, and Kandis was wondering why she didn't come here sooner
• 2:30pm got out of the bath tub
• 2:33pm Nurses checked her progress so far - still 3cm dialated, Gave Kandis an enema to encourage a bowel movement
• 2:55pm Went for a walk down the hallways to the waiting room and visited with Kandis' Parents and Brother
• 3:20pm back to Kandis' room
• 3:45pm got blood work done (4 viles worth)
• 4:30pm Dr. Jabes (Mrs.) examined Kandis, found that she was now 4 cm dialated, broke her water
• 4:40pm the pain of contractions intensifies dramatically
  
• 5:05pm Debbie and Leah put Kandis on an I.V.
• 5:10-5:25 got epidural from Dr. Mang (the anesthesiologist)
• 5:30pm Kandis is now smiling big, as the pain is all gone
• 6:00pm Duecks came in to visit
• 6:10pm Kandis has a self dose pain med, that she used to dull the extra pain
• 7:00pm Kandis is now 8cm dialated! Nurse Debbie "Things are going quickly"
• 7:05pm Nurse Debbie says good bye and good luck as she goes off her shift
• 8:00pm New nurse 'Rose' comes in and puts in a catheter
• 8:05pm Nurse Rose checks Kandis to find her "Fully Dialated!"
• 8:50pm Rose gets Kandis to try to start pushing
• 9:10pm after 20 minutes of pushing Dr. Sheppard (Mrs.) comes in and checks baby's progress. Says to stop pushing (so we don't tire out too soon), get a little more epidural, then within an hour the uterus should have pushed the baby further down, at which time Kandis could try pushing again. It will also give Kandis a bit of time to get some rest.
• 9:20pm more pain meds brought in
• 9:35pm Both Kandis and Mike tried to take a little nap to rest up for the delivery
• 9:50pm Kandis threw-up (this morning sickness is really hanging on)
• 11:00pm Woke up from naps (Mike didn't really get much rest
• 11:03pm Try to push again
• 11:09pm Threw-up again
• 11:19pm Push again
• 11:45pm Threw-up for the third time this evening
• 11:46pm Push
• 11:59pm Still no Baby
• Friday March 17th (St. Patrick's Day)
• 12:10am still pushing
• 12:13am removed the bottom portion of bed to get ready for delivery
• 12:19am can just see the crown of baby's head
• 12:50am KYRA STAR BIETTE was born into the world!!!
  
• 7 lbs 3.5 ounces
• 50.5 cm long (20 inches)
• head is 36 cm (14 inches)
• Lots of hair
• 12:51am cleaned up Kyra, and put her under the warmer
• 1:00-2:30am Called the Biette's in Alberta to anounce the birth, Finished cleaning mommy up, Dueck's came in to see new baby
• 2:45am first breastfeeding
• 3:30am Mike took Kyra to the nursery to be measured and checked as Kandis took a bath and got cleaned up
• 4:30am second breastfeeding
• 5:45am with Kandis and Kyra settled in their room Mike made his way home for the night
• 6:00am Mike updated blog with new pictures
  
• 6:30am The sun is getting ready to rise and Mike is just going down for his sleep
